Your life won’t wait.
Time is our most valuable resource, because we can’t get it back. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.
The past is over and done. While you can’t change your past, you can change your present and future.
It starts as a decision to move forward.
Your decision.
No one is coming to save you.
It can be hard to accept, but it’s true.
This is your life.
No one is going to live it for you, or make all the bad stuff go away.
You get to decide how the rest of your life plays out, starting now.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can help.
EMDR is a therapy developed to help people who are going through what you are experiencing to heal and reclaim their lives from triggers.
EMDR is a simple, effective protocol that you can do from the comfort of your home, or in person in my office in Carytown.
As one therapeutic intervention in our work together, EMDR works by allowing you to process the trauma you have experienced with a newfound awareness and safety.
Life on the other side of this pain.
More ease, freedom from triggers, with self awareness to leave the past where it belongs.
Imagine feeling more willing to forgive yourself, more open-minded and greater clarity and spaciousness.
Each day feels like it’s yours to live – because it is.
It is possible.
The way things are going now, you feel alienated.
Sometimes, a certain tone of voice, smell or sound will send you stumbling backward into old, painful memories.
You feel like you are pushing your loved ones and friends away.
Driving other people away just can’t be an option anymore.
The process of being triggered, while infuriating, actually exists to help you.
Our brains and bodies were developed to adapt to changes in our environment.
For example, if you see a bear while walking in the woods, you need to be able to fight the bear, run away from it, or play dead. This reaction is called the “fight, flight, freeze and fawn” reaction.
This biological system is necessary for survival in an ancient world, but it has not adapted to our modern world.
A problem you may have noticed is that in our modern world, many stimuli trigger this ancient system.
The phone rings, a horn beeps, your email notifies you, and your brain is cascading those same hormones through your body.
Your body acts as if you are facing down that bear in the woods.
But, you’re just trying to get through the day.
While the world has progressed, our bodies have not.
If you have lived through any sort of regular traumatic experiences – such as abuse – these biological reactions have had a lot of regular use.
Even a one-time event, such as a car accident, can have lasting effects on your brain and emotional chemistry.
Like any dependency, your body has come to need the chemical reactions to stay in its own version of familiarity.
EMDR addresses these responses on a deep level.
EMDR can help you bring a newfound awareness to your painful memories, that re-wire your brain’s associations to them.
It’s almost like brain surgery!
EMDR can help make your associations to your old, painful memories less triggering, one session at a time.
You don’t need to suffer anymore.
Our work requires a trusting therapeutic relationship to do this work well.
As your therapist, I promise I will hold a safe space for you to reclaim your power.
You can move forward with the help of therapy and EMDR.
We can’t change your past, but we can change how you relate to your memories.
Take back control of your life.
